Oh boy, oh boy! Rice Freeman Zachary and I chatted today for her podcast! It was great talking with her, she's amazing: funny, creative and asked me good questions. AND she's giving away a copy of Journal Spilling on her blog, VooDoo Cafe, which is a ton o'fun. Leave your comment there to get your name in the hat and check out our podcast.
I thought I'd link the book I mentioned, The Art of Decorative Paper Stencils. It is really not a stenciling book. Do you remember making paper snowflakes back in grade school? That's what this is. Anyway, it got my wheels spinning. I checked out from my local library system as I didn't get the "have to have this book" fever.
Above photo is from my journal done when I was playing with the paper stencils. In addition to the paper cutouts, I used
1. a gessoed background, all smooshed up and distressed
2. the cutouts
3. portfolios, rubbed all around and scribed into
4. my fortune from New Year's eve
One of the things Rice and I talked about was doing these pages in stages. I'm more of a sprinter than a long distance runner. Pages like this develop over a few days. Each stage taken in one brief session with no idea of what is coming next.
I'm gonna try using freezer wrap to create some simple cut-outs that could be used as real stencils. I'll play around with it and get back to you.
Yay and thanks to Rice and VooDoo Cafe for giving away another copy of my book.

And great interview with Ricë.
Loved the interview with Rice.
I just happened to stumble across that stencil book recently and also bought a copy. Great eye candy and I love what you've done with your journal pages.
