Button Necklaces: couple a'tutes

Did you all have a great weekend? It was nice and quiet here, very good. I was at my niece's wedding in Baltimore last weekend which was a ton of fun. In true Donohue family form, we had a multi-cultural wedding: a Catholic ceremony and then the best dance in the world, the Hava Nagila which included the Hora. This really takes me OUT. We danced so hard that I pulled a hamstring. Very joyous indeed. Have I ever told you folks about the Bar Mitzvah of my nephew, Michael Patrick Donohue? No? A good story.

So this weekend was catching up with some overdue spring/fall/spring cleaning. Clearing out our junk room which led to a lot of linens being laundered which led to me jamming my down comforter into the washing machine which led to a flood in the laundry room which led, finally, to a clean kitchen floor. And all that time, I was thinking about this tutorial from VeryPurplePerson on making covered button necklaces. And I got to it and took some pics for all of you. Very Purple's tute is excellent. She's got such an elegant sophisticated look. I was making do with what I had on hand so I changed up a couple of things. She looks super cool with the really long necklace but I don't like to call a lot of attention to my mid-section so made them shorter. So here are some pics for the jewelry-making challenged. (I'm not at all sure where to get a pendant bail.)
After covering the button, cut a smaller circle to cover the back.

I had Fabri-Tac glue on hand and just ran a bead around the outside edge of the back. I'm sure any glue would be fine. Just be neat and wipe away any excess.

Use an awl to poke a hole through the fabric and (in this case, plastic) back of the button. Make the hole big enough to insert the wire.

Here's the (very professional) loop I made. I dipped the end of the loop into Fabri-Tac (or you could use the E-6000 Very Purple suggests or Gorilla Glue).

Put a little dot of your chosen adhesive to add more stability to the hanging hook.

Add a chain and you are good to go. It would be fun to do a bit of embroidery or cross stitch on the fabric first. It would be fun to make a bunch of different sizes and hang them on a chain. It would be fun to make keychains. Oooo! How about a button charm bracelet using smaller covered buttons. Wouldn't these be cute on flip-flops? These are extremely quick to make. Really, really quick. Don't we LOVE that.

Shout out to I Need Orange for suggesting ball point needles on tee shirt material and she had a great idea on changing up a few design elements. Thanks. I love comments! Thanks for your birthday wishes as well. It seems a lot of really great folks are April babies!

G'Night all,
Diana

Hi Diana,

I purchased your Journal Spilling book from you a few weeks back and I have posted about you on my blog. I have been "Spilling" and wanted to share with my followers about you and your book and what an inspiration you have been in my creative journey. I also made something for my spilling journal, so please come over and take a peek at: www.sjmcdowell.blogspot.com

I love your Button necklace.
Try "Annie Howes" for bails, chains and so much more, you may find her over at Etsy.

Hugs and Smiles,
