This Mess

This box of interesting objects has been haunting me for a week or so now. I was gonna  sort it out so I left it on the floor of the studio. Then tripped over it and pushed it out of the way until today I slapped myself and realized it just wasn't going to happen. How in the world do you go about sorting something like this (and the other four boxes just like it)? Cute shoes though, right?

Today I cut up dozens of pieces of papers and binders board and very neatly stacked and packed it all up in its pristine glory for my Flagbook class at Art and Soul. It's all perfect and virgin right now. It will be  covered with juicy colorful paste and torn and cut and manipulated and collaged and turned into little flags that will, in turn, be oh-so-neatly bound into books. And when the books are opened: a rush of fluttery sound and visual feast. Pristine.Chaotic Energy.Tidiness.Energy Unleashed. I like that rhythm.

This is a world of ratios. Doesn't that box of chaos present more exciting possibilities than any of those objects would lonely and cold in containers? It's like when you see a beautiful stone in the forest. You take it home and, while it is still beautiful, it is not as delicious as it was sitting in the moss with tangles of decaying leaves around it.

I think chaos has a definite place in my world.

Divine chaos. Sometimes I get a bit overwhelmed with how chaotic things are in my life, but then I realize, I would be totally bored without it! I think the same goes for art boxes!

I love my chaos even more now: delicious papers of every color and texture imaginable, glues, punches, stamps, boxes, fabrics, aah...I don't have to clean it up today. I can browse my art journals and others' instead, and dream. Have a lovely weekend! ~Kathy

Somehow the chaos has more... potential. When I see a big mess of stuff like that, I almost want to roll around in it a little. Must be some primordial urge, I don't know.

Anyway, I LOVE your shoes!

Here's a quote you might enjoy: "Clutter and mess show us that life is being lived...Tidiness makes me think of held breath, of suspended animation... Perfectionism is a mean, frozen form of idealism, while messes are the artist's true friend. What people somehow forgot to mention when we were children was that we need to make messes in order to find out who we are and why we are here."— Anne Lamott
